The visiting President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, on Wednesday was accorded the highest honours by Malawi’s capital city of Lilongwe at the start of his three -day state visit.
Straight from his arrival at Kamuzu International Airport, President Mnangangwa was accompanied by his host President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera to the Civic Offices at City Centre.
The symbolism around the gesture saw the Mayor of Lilongwe City, Councillor Richard Banda, presenting a dummy key to President Mnangagwa, granting him the Freedom of the City.
The event is a longtime tradition at which the host nation or city grants freedom of entry to the distinguished visitor.
In his remarks, the Zimbabwe leader expressed gratitude for the conferment of the freedom of the City before appending his signature in acceptance of the rare honour.
The visiting leader was also presented with a gift from the City of Lilongwe. Reciprocating the gesture, the Zimbabwe leader presented to the Mayor with a crocodile skin.
