Malawi President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera says his administration has done enough to open the economy to foreign investors.
Delivering a keynote address at the Invest in Malawi Forum in New York, the United States of America (USA) on Monday evening, President Chakwera touted Malawi as the land of opportunities.
The forum was organised by Ministry of Trade and Industry in collaboration with Minnesota Africans United, Prosper Africa and Malawi Investment and Trade Centre (MITC).
He courted potential investors who attended the forum to consider investing in Malawi saying the country has a competitive and secure business environment.
“Malawi has constantly and consistently implemented business reforms across all sectors aimed at reducing the cost, time and procedures for doing business,” said President Chakwera.
“Over the years, we have reviewed numerous economic related laws and introduced new ones. Malawi is a land of opportunities. So today I invite you to consider getting a head start on opportunities for a win-win partnership,” he said.
President Chakwera cited various projects in energy, agriculture, tourism, mining, health, education and transport that were being implemented to attract foreign direct investment.
“For years, Malawi has been known for its potential in such sectors as Agriculture, Tourism, and Mining, but it is really in the past few years that we have intentionally taken steps to light up the necessary runways for receiving unprecedented levels of investment in the next few years,” he said.
President Chakwera assured the gathering that his administration had formulated legal instruments that guarantee the safety and security of investment.
