One of the leaders of demonstrations in support of the corruption fight, Sylvester James Ayuba, is himself not angel as he faces possible arrest for using unregistered vehicle suspected to have been stolen in South Africa.
The 2019 Toyota Hilux, chassis number AHTFR22G706079074 registration number NS 285, was impounded by Police in Lilongwe when the lawyer had gone there to sort out issues for his client.
Ironically, the client – Ibrahim Suwedi – had been picked by Police after he was caught for also using an unregistered vehicle.
By instinct, one of the officers suggested that they check Ayuba’s car and were shocked to learn that it does not appear anywhere in the Road Traffic Department system.
When Police informed him of his transgressions Ayuba is said to have become violent and profane. He tried to drive out of the premises in defiance but was blocked by officers manning the gates.
Police sources say they have information that the vehicle was stolen in South Africa during a heist where a man was killed.
The law enforcers say this is criminal in nature and should be further dealt with in conjunction with other security agencies in the rainbow nation.
Files at Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) offices in Lilongwe show that Ayuba was fined K15 million as duty for the vehicle and a 100% fine. He tried to appeal for restoration but not successful.
